GOLDEN — Jeffco Public Schools is prepping to hold its 2nd annual Cans Around the Campus food drive from March 19-22.

This year, 13 high schools — Arvada, Arvada West, Bear Creek, Chatfield, Columbine, Dakota Ridge, Evergreen, Golden, Green Mountain, Lakewood, Pomona, Standley Lake and Wheat Ridge — from across the school district will compete to raise the most can foods.

Food donated during the week of March 19-22 will go to the Arvada Food Bank, Jeffco Action Center and Mountain Resource Center.

Members of Pomona High School’s Diversity Club pose with the plaque it received last year after collecting 1,852 pounds of food for the inaugural Cans Around the Campus food drive. Pomona raised the most food of the nine Jeffco high schools that took part in the week-long food drive last year that netted more than 5,000 pounds of food for the Arvada Community Food Bank and The Action Center in Jeffco. There will also be collection sites at Jeffco Public Schools’ four district stadiums — Jeffco Stadium, Trailblazer Stadium, the North Area Athletic Complex and Lakewood Memorial Field — during the week. Teams and fans will have the opportunity to drop of can foods during boys and girls lacrosse, girls soccer and track meets during the week.

Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood will be the site of the kickoff event Saturday, March 17. Teams and spectators at the Arvada City Track & Field Championships are encouraged to bring food to the all-day track meet that begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at Jeffco Stadium.

Last year’s event raised 5,000 pounds of food for local food banks in Jefferson County. Pomona High School collected the most donations last year with 1,852 pounds. Nine high schools in Jeffco participated in last year’s event.
